Where we live, we are considered a Hardiness Zone 5. A few things to consider and have a plan for, when looking at starting your garden and planting your first plants. One of the most important things many don't tell you, is this.
Find your magic number.
The #FarmersAlmanac is a great starting and overall resource for all things plants. Before heading to your local nursery and falling in love with all that they offer (trust me, it will be overwhelming. You'll want everything!), you need to make sure the plants you love and purchase, are a match made in heaven with your zone climate. They won't last long if you don't because they won't have their optimal conditions. Just as shade plants can't do a sun-filled flower bed, and vise-versa.
When I first started my garden, I made the same mistake. I purchased six blueberry plants. Planted them and waited to savour delicious blueberries, only to be heartbroken when one by one they died. Blueberry bushes need a certain type of soil for them to get the needed minerals to flourish. I also planted them against a building with charcoal metal siding, which proved to be too hot of a place for them. Especially in the spring when they would prematurely start budding when it was still too cold.
Now, we currently have four very healthy and happy Haskup berry bushes, that are absolutely thriving. They are part of the blueberry family, but their berries are different shape and taste. I'm not picky. It has also brought the neighbourhood-worth of bubble bees, which are a very welcome sight. My youngest is absolutely enthralled by them.
Once you have found your magic garden number, go onto your local nursery's website and browse all that they offer. Take a few notes of the plants that work with your climate, and roughly how many you think you will need for the space you have available. This will give you some background info and choices before heading to them. It will also remind you when you are there, how much space you actually have, and not to over purchase!
Most warmer climate areas in Canada and the US, have very large inventories of plants to choose from. Some of our favourites are the Wave Petunias, Zonal Geraniums, and Cana Lillies, which combined, will give you a wow factor for any garden, all summer and early fall. Low maintenance, and the darker the colour the better the show!
Good Luck! Let me know how your trip goes.
